Science Museum School Trip

This month, every form in Thames Park Secondary School will have the chance to go on a trip to the Science Museum in London. Some forms have already gone, and this report is written by a student in Year 7 Silva from their point of view.  They travelled using the c2c train and the Underground, which was very exciting, and everyone demonstrated their self-responsibility skills. There were also many interesting and fun photos taken – some which have been shown in the article. The following topics will be covered; Travelling, The Museums basement and Ground floor, the 1^st and 2^nd floor, and the 3^rd floor. Enjoy!

Travelling

They travelled by first walking up to the c2c station near Thames Park Secondary School. Their stop on this train was Fenchurch Street, and when that destination was reached, they walked to the Underground.  Between this, they had a chance to look at the great Tower Of London, from the most incredible view! Once the form was on the Underground train, their next stop was Tower Hill. They then walked for a few minutes through London, until they reached the Science Museum.

The Basement and Ground Floor

The basement had the unit of ‘The Secret Life Of Home’, which showed how all of the everyday pieces of furniture developed throughout the years, and how everyday items work with their mechanisms. It had many old pieces of appliances, such as baths, toilets, ovens and refrigerators, and also showed how the toilet and the washing machine worked.

The Ground floor had the units ‘Exploring Space’, ‘Making the Modern World’ and ‘Tomorrow’s world: Our Future Planet’ The ‘Exploring Space’ hall simply had to be one of the favourites! It had a piece of the rocket ‘Black Arrow’,  a beautiful display of space, a giant floating sun, which told facts about the sun itself and the space around it, and even changed colour! Believe it or not, there was even a piece of the actual moon, which was purely shocking.

‘Making the Modern World’ had some of the oldest objects in history. It had pieces of an ancient train, which was just fascinating! There were clocks over 100 years old, yet another train from 1868, and so many cars! One of the first types of transport made was actually a horse and cart, and some carts were displayed in the museum. There were also some of the first actual car models, and you could definitely see how vehicles developed over the past few years.

‘Tomorrow’s World: Our Future Planet.’ Is a section of the museum which explains our nature and how we can save it from dying. It had some different types of soils for plant growth, how grass grows and posters of how trees and flowers grow. Even though it was quite a small section, it was just as amazing as all the others.

The First and Second Floor

Floor number one had the sections ‘Medicine’ and ‘Who am I?’. The ‘Who am I?’ unit really made everyone understand who they actually where and what they are classified as. You could answer some questions, which will then base your answers on the specific topic. Some of which include gender, body, mental age, appearance and many more which really make you think about your life. There is even a 5-player game where you can create an avatar and define yourself, and then play fun games with the people around you. It is a great way to make new friends, or just play with your best friends.

The ‘Medicine’ section had different body part sculptures, and different medical items. It showed how the everyday medical utensils developed over time and was very educational and useful for Science. It even had a full human skeleton, complete with every single bone in the human body. How shocking is that? As a form, we had so much fun learning and laughing at the same time.

On the second floor, we mostly hung out in the ‘Mathematics’ section, where it explained and time-lined all of the famous mathematicians over time. There was also a Clockmakers Section, which interested some of the students. It had Grandfather clocks, Grandmother clocks, pocket watches, and every other watch you can think of. An employee told us the story of what clocks were used in ships, which was so interesting!

The Third Floor

On the third floor, our form managed to see the ‘Flight’ section. There were different planes from different Wars, the development of planes over the past hundreds of years, and many more parts of planes. They reminded everyone of the wars and some strangers even got tearful after reading about what happened to a person who flew a certain plane which was on display. From our experience, we think that this was a great way to expand our knowledge on history when we study the World Wars.

Overall, I think that our experience in the museum was great. SU says: “I liked it, and I also liked when we were hunting down each other’s groups to meet up.” MV: “I really enjoyed our experience. It was very fun hanging out with friends while learning at the same time!” We all hope that we have more trips like this in the future.
